Breeding Buff Leghorns

With the hot summer, coccidiosis can be a problem. It is everywhere and lives in the soil, protozoa is the cause and they thrive when the soil temp. gets high. The medicated feed has a very low dosage and may not prevent coccidiosis. In addition give "sulmet" liquid every few days in water as directed."Amprol" is a powder that mixes with water and is also used. It may not be the cause of your losses but then again it might be.I treat for it during the months of june/july/aug./and sept. The old birds have developed an immunity and do not need treating.

Arie, I wonder if my sports will feather in like that?

Your oldest pullet is tall and has thick strong shanks. She should be a nice framed large bird at maturity. She is just the kind you want, not the small ,overly spindle legged, knock kneed, narrow and short ones.

I might have one or two that have some peppering or white left in the tail. Someone is supposed to be coming Tuesday to look at them, otherwise they go to auction Wednesday night. Might keep a trio just for myself for layers.

Dan, thanks for the compliments. That pullet is as large in terms of height and length as my old production barred rocks, amazing to see that in person. Also thanks for earlier advice on coccidia, etc.

Hannah, if you end up stuck with any birds and are just going to take them to auction, let me know, I might take some.

Hi everyone,
Thought I might introduce myself. I really like these Buff Leghorns, and I've talked to Dan about getting some at the Northeastern Poultry Congress show. Real nice looking birds they are. Can't wait to try them out! I tried once for some Silvers, but I had none hatch.
