breeding chickens

Welcome to BYC!
If you want purebreds, only keep the same breed together. A Welsummer and a SS aren't going to make a new breed. They'll make a pretty mutt, or hybrid, tho.
If you had, for example, a silver laced brahma and a gold laced brahma together then you'll get some-kind-of-cool-color brahma.
Hope that helps!

I agree with silkiecuddles, but I would even try and breed your rooster to another hen, not only of the same breed, but of the same color variety in order to insure as pure a breed as possible. For example, I would breed a Buff Brahma rooster to a Buff Brahma hen instead of breeding him to a Dark Brahma hen. And as much as is possible I would try and match roosters and hens that conformed to APA standards.

kinda confused by the question, the only way to know what breed your producing is to know that both our roo and hen are the same breed and cooped together with no other roos around.

okay thanks guys that helps...I had read somewhere u had to breed a RIR rooster to like a white leghorn to get a buff...so I was so confused on breeding

Oh well that can be true, some designer breeds are just like designer dogs, people mix and match and then just make up a name.

You're welcome. You can breed a RIR rooster to a silver gene hen (such as a RIW, SLW, Delaware, Light Sussex, etc.) and you will get Red Sex Link offspring which can be sexed by color at hatching (male chicks are whitish, female chicks are reddish). Some hatcheries market Red Sex Links under the label Golden Buff, but they are hybrids rather than an actual breed and they will not breed true when mated to each other. However, they are egg laying machines.
