Yup..tis is true...
I wouldnt even bother going to a shelter for a dog... they give too much of a hassle..and thats a main reason they stay overcrowded..
Sad..but true.

Yep. And they turn around and blame the problem on everyone else but themselves. You are probably better off going to an animal control shelter so you won't have to deal with the hassle. They may be high kill, but they aren't overly strict when it comes to rehoming an animal. I wouldn't go to mine though. Nieghbors dog got loose and eneded up there once. He died of what I think was parvo the day after they got him back.

I so agree! KiKi (the siamese) is from a very nice humane society that went out of their way to make sure we got to adopt her (long story).
Tried going through a breed rescue for a GSD. We have 80 acres, but prefer to keep our dogs inside. In addition our yard fence is not what we consider secure. They wouldn't adopt to us.

To the OP, protodon:
Your question started quite a discussion, didn't it? I love dogs...I think everyone else on this thread does too. I think there has been some distraction from that simple fact. I get what you are wanting to do: you are wanting to explore having the kind of intense training relationship with a working dog that some people have with dogs like border collies. You should check out this writer's website: http://www.bedlamfarm.com/ I read one of his books: The Dogs of Bedlam Farm. You would enjoy reading his books. Do what you love.

If anything its the shelters fault for killing those animals. not the the fault of most breeders and pet owners. THEY are the ones taking them in and doing all the killing. some of those animals probably weren't sellable. They are also a business by selling animals.

No, they are doing the dirty work. They did not create the problem, it's up to them to deal with it though. If they didn't, the streets would be full of starving feral dogs. It's so much easier to take an animal to the shelter and convince yourself that it will find a nice home in the country than it is to have an unwanted animal humanely euthanised. There are only so many homes and there is an endless stream of unwanted dogs. If a person cannot afford an $85 adoption fee (for a sterilised, vaccinated dog), they sure as hell can't afford to keep the animal.

disclaimer: sorry did not yet read all the posts
My BC was the love of my life. We went to herding class and I had to learn way more than he did. He already knew what to do, just needed a little guidance. He was intact and got hit one night when he snuck out. Apparently he had a GF down the street, but when he was 14 and his hearing was going he did not hear the car coming as he crossed the street to come back home. I miss him every day. We now have a neutered BC/Kelpie mix. He stays home.
I would not breed BC's unless you are working with them. They are a working breed and need to be working stock or doing agility every day. If I see an ad in the paper for BC's as 'good family pets', I know they're just in it for the money. If I get another purebred it will be from working parents that I have seen work.
I fostered several BC's. There is a reason they were foster dogs-someone had tried to keep them as a house pet and it made them crazy. They got too popular because they are smart and handsome, and everyone had to have one.
Good luck and love the dog(s) you have

They only clean up the dirty work when thereis true, proven, creulty involved. And yes they are the problem since they seem to be the only killing all those animals. They are also the ones encouraging people to dump their animals because they feel it would be better off at the shelter, instead of given to a new owner. Believe oyu me I am on plenty of websites where they tell people their animals are better off without them at the animal shelter. And who gets the blame? The person that bred it. I also disgagree about the $85 adoption. That attitude is whay some people end up going to get a free pup from a farmer (or anyone that advertises in the paper)instead. Because they aren't going to be mistreated by them when they get the dog. Shelters are a business. A lot of them make money off their animals, plus the donations. Most are not very good shelters, do to the fact that they are overly protective of their animals.

I know breed specific rescues are almost all dog flippers. They contract with all the shelters in there driving range. Get called when there breed comes in. Pick up a pure breed before the general public gets a chance at it. Dog are already vetted an fixed. They pay less than the public would an then put them up for adoption at there place for $300+ more than they have in them.
