BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

OMG, Dunlap has bantam NNs! Trying to wrap my head around that...

they are popular. both as pets and for showing.

BUT it is unusual for a hatchery to offer bantam NN.. knew there was one, not sure if it was Dunlap or another place?

Yup, @GabrielBane that was the post! Don't know why I couldn't find it, the 'search thread' option is awesome for posts you want to refer back to, just didn't work today for me today. No way was I going to search the whole thread!

Dunlap IMHO might be the best bet, at least there description and pics look similar to S&G, and they are listed in their boilers, no other hatchery does that. They do ALSO say mixed colors even though their pic looks S&G, maybe mixed also? S&G stock was red.
I got my NN's from Cackle in May after Hellbender recommend them, have some great big birds, see no evidence of any S&G influence in them though unless they were mixed in.

Just a quick note to mention the surprise I got this evening while locking down my birds. I witnessed Moloch, my big broad 3/4 Cornish cockerel, at about 20 weeks of age, covering one of my bitching White Chantecler hens. I've only heard him crow a few times and expected him to be the last of the three to consummate the deal.

These adult hens have been less than cordial with these new youngsters and the sight gave me a very welcome surprise because I thought he might bee too clumsy to pull it off and that I might have to rely on one of the pure Dark Cornish to pull it off. Very welcome surprise.

I think I've gotten through the 'glitch' with uploading pics and will try to get 'er done later on today, good, bad or ugly. Warning: I'm a very poor chicken photographer and can not get them to cooperate. I'm going to try to take some more (better) pics today and whatever comes out will have to do.

I just got off the phone with Dunlap Hatchery. They confirmed that all of the large fowl NNs they will have on offer this year are from the S&G stock (they are not mixing with other stock or something). I got my order for 25 in for the first hatch date - February 22.

Woohoo!!!!!

(ahem)

Sorry. OK, I'm calm now (well, sort of). I sobered up a bit when I realized I now have more housing to arrange...

I had a somewhat similar surprise recently - the Lavender Ameraucana cockerel that's in with the Marans, Cream Legbars, and German New Hampshire girls is not tiny, but in no way very large, and is not aggressive or pushy with the ladies. The GNH girls are independent - and at least one of them (Blanche) mounts one of the CL pullets in a show of dominance. Well, just the other day, I saw Blanche squat for the Lav Am. Good for him.

They can be sneaky like that. Glad to hear this - you wanted this cross, right?

Hope you can get the pictures thing figured out - looking forward to seeing the birds!

Here's the update on the Sulmtalers so far, the median weight between them is about 5.3oz, with some variations in how they're feathering in out, I definitely see pullet in the last one, we'll see!
#1 (I'm starting to guess cockerel):

Chick #2 (cockerel?):

Chick #3 (I'm guessing pullet for sure!)

Is it good to weigh the chicks? I had weighed the eggs when first set. The chicks are now almost 3 weeks old. But if I weigh them now, it wouldn't tell me if they are going to be good as a table bird?

How long do you weigh? ie Every week, every other week?
