BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Hmm, the Hovabator model 1588 is supposed to keep and control temp regardless of changing temps outside the box. I assume temp control also plays a part in keeping humidity more constant.
The 1588 does a good job but it is best to keep the temperature steady. You could keep the room at 80 all the time and it would work fine for example. The problem is that they do not adjust quickly enough.

Another problem in hot rooms it that there is no cooling in an incubator. if the room goes to 104 for example, the incubator cannot be any cooler than that temperature.

Not being sarcastic but hoping the inside temp of your room never maxes over 100 degrees or you'll fry also!

Of course not!

If you lived in Arizona and were trying to hatch in a shed, it would easily get over 100 in the day time. A closed shed can get to 150 or so.

There is a person here in California that does not have air conditioning and the room she is hatching in gets too hot. She can only hatch during the cool times of the year. Swamp coolers will often not be able to keep up with the heat either.

We all have to remember that there are places that are a lot different from where we live.

A story on fluctuating temperature and how flexible these eggs can be. I set 6 dozen eggs for a friend in my GQF large cabinet style incubator. It is totally automatic and just need water added for the humidity and temperature checked if needed. It also has back up thermostats etc.So it is really pretty safe. We were going to be gone so I set it in my storage building so my neighbor could come while we were gone and add more water and check temperature while we were gone. We were gone 10 days and when I returned he came down and told me that the temperatures were so cool that the incubator was not able to heat up enough. He said he finally brought a piece of insulation and put over it and that seemed to help. The temps we know did not get about 92-93 degrees for 3-4 days. The eggs still hatched but hatched out 5-6 days late. We still had 55 chicks out of 70 eggs. The chicks did not seem weak . None died in the shell. In fact the ones that were fertile and died looked like they died with in week one of the hatch. My neighbor was shocked at how many chicks he had. I called him and said come pick up your chicks. He said what chicks. I said about fifty chicks. They were RIR, Wh Leg, and Barnyard MIX. He was super happy about those chicks.
This shows how flexible those eggs are, they were able to continue to develop longer because the temperatures were not high enough . It basically delayed the hatch..
Mother Nature!
This is amazing. Those big style incubators are the bomb.

For example, the first time a set my incubator up in the storeroom It was fine. Then as the day went by it got higher and higher. I brought it in the house when it hit 110. I thought they were dead and everyone told me they were dead. 11 of 14 hatched. I've never had a better hatch since. I keep it in the bedroom at mid 70's. I'm really hoping for good hatches for the 1588. It should get here tomorrow. Yea.

And over in this corner of the country, a swamp cooler does absolutely nothing. We have only been using our AC in the hottest months. The rest of the time the windows are open (unless it's too cold to leave them open). If it's too great a temp diff between in and out, then we won't want to go outside in the afternoon, which is the time of day we really ought to be checking the chickens and their waterers.

It was a lovely 27* F here this morning and I think it will max out at 65/67. Warm enough for at least three of my motley NN hens to decide to be broody. Don't know if they actually have enough feathers to do the job but there calling for a warming trend and I surely don't need the eggs so I'm gonna' let them have 5 eggs each.

This is why my incubator lives in my office...so I can keep the room temps from spiking. (I keep the house around 80 in the summer and around 70 in the winter.)

My Brinsea thermometer comes today! Right now I'm holding steady at 100.5 which is a degree warmer than my other hatches. Still having problems keeping humidity up with my incubator in the new room.

My 4 Delawares laid 6 eggs the past two days. This is after finding eggs for the first time this past week. What amazes me more is that two days ago I moved them to the chicken tractor and it didn't seem to slow them down!

Wow, did I ever screw up. I ordered my Hova Bator 1588 and "thought" it said one business day before shipping. Actually it was the economy I got with 4-12 bus days and I have Black Australorp eggs coming in today. Not sure what to do. I don't know anyone with a 'bator close to me. They weren't much $26 so I may just have to bite the bullet. Not sure yet.
