BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

On a different note...I hesitate to publish these pics...total of 61 birds..18 Buckeye pullets and 8 or 9 Chantecler 'what-evers', due to arrive on 6/3....the coming segment of the order will be a bit of surprise to my family because I altered the order as I didn't want any of a certain breed of birds here as it broke with their....none the less, there will be about 60 or 62 new birds in total, when the dust settles and I intend to have several capons of this lot.

OOPS,,,Chanteclers, Dark Cornish and Buckeyes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOLOL I've been naughty!

To my delight, all these chicks seem well developed and out-going but I'm especially thrilled with the vibrance of the Dark Cornish. They are large, chunky little bright-eyed creatures and likely my favorite of the lot.

Beer can, my two cents. I have raised rabbits for food. I concur with the California or new Zealand's. Stay awayfrom the giants for meat production. My breeders where fed 8oz a day of pellets. My litters averaged 8 to 10. Once weened the bunnies went into a communal hutch and fed as much as they could stand for 6 wks. Then butchered. By force breeding ( exactly what it sounds like ) you can keep your doe preg. Though I did alternate the cycle. 1 buck 6 doe's equaled close to 200fryers in two months.

I live in southeast texas. Very hot and humid. When my litter size dropped to 6or less that doe got a month off.some of the prettiest came from crossing a wild rabbit doe with my California buck. I had some that were ORANGE with white bellies. Ok. Back to chickens

before we leave the rabbit topic completely I want to add that I found the Google "Texas A&M rabbit" an interesting search and found the breeds
that this farm raises interesting:

I also found the comments by Joel Salatin interesting as his son attempted to raise rabbits on pasture in chicken tractors (youtube).

I read some interesting comments on pelt quality on meat rabbits during my search. Show rabbits versus commercial ..................

Very glad to have you join us! FYI...This thread is for the discussion of production animals, not exclusively dedicated to chickens. Actually...we are quite open to discuss most topics, other than those prohibited by BYC.

I know there is better ones out there I just like being different :) just don't want to go so far as wasting too much $$.

If you find exceptional joy or pleasure with them, I personally wouldn't consider it a waste.....this coming from one who is constantly 'wasting' money.
