BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

My dad, hellbender will be out of circulation for a while
due to unfortunate circumstances. he has given me
permission to use his pc at will and for the first time,
except very early in the history of this thread.

Jason....#1Son

Hello, Jason! That's a shame about your dad and please tell him we'll be thinking of him and praying for him to get back on top of things. Please keep us posted? I need to bring him a couple of WR hens in May sometime and that's creeping up on us. Waiting to hear from Kurt when his May BA chicks will hatch and I'll try to do the trip all in one go, bringing HB his white birds and swinging up to get some blacks from Kurt. At least...that's the plan. You know how plans go....

Kurt, I would love to....but that's smack in the middle of our trout fishing vacation with the family. Even though I'd be halfway to your place, I'd hate to miss any of that as we wait all year long for that one event with great anticipation. Are you hatching any of them in May? I'll likely be coming more in your direction some time in the second week of May or thereabouts. That date is very flexible and will likely revolve around just when and if you have chicks coming in May.

My last incubator hatch is 4 weeks old this weekend and I'm still thrilled with the results so far. @Kev Do you know if a cushion comb is linked with slow maturation in males? None of my cushion comb chicks are showing wattles that would indicate any of them are male, but one in particular is so large I'm having a hard time believing it's not a cockerel. Here 'he' is:

Monty (pullet? cockerel?) - White Rock/Ameraucana mix = 13.23 ounces @ 4 Wks

Some of my other favorites include:

Comet (pullet?) - White Rock/Ameraucan mix = 11.75 ounces @ 4 weeks:

Gypsy (pullet) - NN/Bielefelder mix = 9.88 ounces @ 4 wks

Simon (cockerel) - NN/White Rock mix = 12.52 ounces @ 4 Wks

Ziggy (pullet) - Ameraucana/Dorking-mix mix = 9.88 ounces @ 4 Wks

Peta (cockerel) - NN/Cochin NN mix = 12.13 ounces @ 4 Wks

And Quincy (cockerel) - Dorking-mix/Barred Rock = 12.73 ounces @ 4 Wks

Monty and Comet both look like cockerels to me. Monty's comb looks more like a pea comb to me, but then it's really hard to tell in the picture, I'm a littke better in person at telling such things. The small wattles usually are an Ameraucana thing that runs with the pea comb.

Christine,
Usually in 4 weeks I can tell with my EE's and AM's. When you look real hard at a pea comb and you see a single line of pimples it is a pullet. My cockerels all seem to have 3 parallel lines of pimples in the pea comb. Does that make any sense with your bird? i do not know what is going on with Quincy's comb. LOL

Well, it's not much, but with Bane/Snape, my big NN flock rooster with the funky rose/walnut/whatever comb, I was convinced he was a pullet for long after I was sure about everyone else. It wasn't just the comb - his growth was down with the pullets before having his great big growth spurt and outgrowing everyone else. I know it's not the same, but...

(If I were forced to guess, the legs make me think Monty is a cockerel.)

They're not pea combs...they're cushion combs...very smooth just like their father's comb. That's why it's so hard for me to determine gender based on comb. I wasn't 100% sure of their father's gender until he started crowing and growing saddle feathers.

That's my though too because his shanks are sooooo thick and so far he's the heaviest bird in the flock. He's just so docile compared to the other cockerels...not a lick of posturing from this guy. Then again, he's heavier and larger than all of them so maybe they just let him have his way.
