BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Thanks for the well wishes.

Not many people seemed to appreciate the black bear pics. Nor do we appreciate threats to our livestock from any varmint and the bear population in West Virginia has reached VARMINT proportions...in fact there are far more black bear in this state now than there were when the Native Americans controlled this area of the country.

FYI...that was not the first black bear to breach the electric fence, especially this time of the year. Apples and grapes hit moderately but most mast was nonexistent, leaving the bears wiling to take big risks to put on fat for the winter.

None of the young dogs were seriously hurt and every part of the bear went to use.

Welcome back!

I think I'd probably have a heart attack if a bear showed up at our place. We don't have many bear problems around here, but every now and then one appears in a housing area around Tucson. I'm really impressed with your dogs for taking it on. I suspect my own dogs would all have hidden behind my legs if one had shown up here.

@hellbender Getting that way here also. The Adirondacks were the only area with a bear season and a portion of the Catskills fifteen yrs ago. Now most of NY state is getting over run with them. The DEC has been talking maybe baiting and dogs soon because the bear harvest hasn't kept the population in check.

Welcome Back Hellbender.

Glad all went well for you.

That bear is no joke. I think wild life (for better or for worse) is making a come back world wide. We modern humans have yet figure out how to manage this new paradigm. The wild life is coming back but not necessarily their ranges and food sources. This could spell trouble if we don't learn how to manage things... and quick.

Welcome back.

I appreciated Ariel's posts and updates tell her thank you from me.

I saw the picture, but was unsure wheatear or not it breached your system.
There are reports of Black Bears in our area here in Arkansas, right in the community where I live and my house is surrounded by woods. I personally have not seen any but done neighbors say they have. No reports if any bothering livestock though.

There have been a couple if instances where they were photographed in a nearby town. It isn't any wonder though they're coming out in towns they want to keep cutting down tree and making the woods area dense for houses built so close to each other they're practically part if each other. Then the shopping malls. They're getting crazy with building those around here.

Anyway it's good to have you back. Looking forward to Ariel getting back with her own user.

Welcome back ... and I am not happy to hear you have bears breaching an electric perimeter. Electric is the only thing we have against the bears here in Florida. This year was the first for a limited bear hunting harvest, and of course my area was allowed the most due to population numbers (of the bear, not people). Lots of regulations on the hunt as well ... and the only person I talked to who wanted to go hunting bear was laid up with an injury.

I enjoyed the black bear pics. Brought back memories of when we had our camp in Tioga, PA. Black bears in the back yard all year until bear season. Then they disappeared. I guess the PGC trapping and transferring them didn't help matter come hunting season.

I would not give them squash primarily. It is not a good food item to build around. It is a good supplement.

I would have to build around something that was a better energy source. They need more of that than anything else, so if I was trying something like that (I am not), I would start there. A root crop or a grain.

Am I understanding you correctly?

We feed grain mainly. Good to know!

Heard the anti's are trying to put a stop to it, they had in NJ many times, they have so many bears they were breaking into people's garages for pet food and eating dogs and cats....Many around here with bee hives use electric fences. Bears haven't bothered us yet, they are in my back yard, destroying the farmer down the roads corn, knocks down acres, and they love to tear open his wrapped round bales and eat nothing, just tear the plastic and ruin them.

They probably sent them up here Lol! There has been rumors that our DEC transported problem bears from NJ up here, I find it hard to believe they didn't given our current bear explosion when they only breed every two to three years. Though I did catch on video a mama and three cubs on my trail cam set up where I put my stand for bow season for deer. I missed a huge one over 400lbs maybe 500lbs I'd say with the bow two years ago while it was ripping round bales in a little field in the woods, shot under it's neck aiming for it broadside at twenty yards on the ground, I never miss don't know what happened....It ran about fifty yards from me in the woods and just stood there staring at me, wouldn't leave even though I was screaming at it, then I WAS scared, I need a bigger knife....
