BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Talk about funny targeted ads - at the top of the BYC pages now for me is the ad for something called MiniBar - where they will deliver liquor and wine to your home, apparently. Too funny. (And if I did't already have wine here, I would actually consider clicking!!!)

So sorry to hear this ant farm.
I agree with hellbender, that looks pretty bad.
If it isn't as bad as it looks and you insist on keeping it check out Lambert Kay EMT gel at TSC, good for man and beast, including birds and reptiles.
active ingredient Type 1 Hydrolysate of Collagen which provides a matrix for new cell growth.Seals and protects wounds, Promotes rapid healing, Relieves pain & itching, Reduces scarring, Non-toxic and non-sensitizing.
Seals off nerve endings to diminish pain and itching, and forms a protective barrier over the wound that reduces the chance of infection. Collagen formulation works with the body to speed new cell growth and healing.

I saw it work wonders on a bad flesh wound into the meat on my dog, was amazing, left no scar and the hair even grew back. I sprayed the wound with iodine first, Betadine, and then only used the EMT gel. Though I doubt your rooster will ever have a tail again, if it lives.

When you find the owner, small claims court for cost of loss. Save your receipts.

Thanks - I will look into it. I think the pictures do look a lot worse than it is. But I am going to try to treat him through this - I'm not willing to make a cull decision at this point this early. He is up, alert, eating and drinking well this AM, and muttering to me, though preferring to sit quietly in the box when not doing so. I will watch him carefully.

All birds will stay indoors tomorrow and I've arranged to work from home to tend Dumbledore and work on security. I am on alert. And VERY unhappy. Is it wrong of me to want those dogs to DIE DIE DIE???!!!

You know... we don't live in a world of black and white. There is a lot of gray out there, and opposite and equal truths exist. Those dogs may be a pet or best friend for someone, but they are also a predator destroying your property, pet, BFF, etc. It is wrong to cause someone pain and right to protect what is yours and on your property. Being human means having to walk that tightrope and your feelings and any necessary actions are justified.

Thanks to everyone for your contributions to this thread. It's inspiring to hear the many different approaches people have to raising chickens. Clearly people can enjoy and benefit from their chickens in many, many different ways. And those birds can be productive in many diverse systems ranging from Tractor Supply feed to fermented foods and even my crazy mix of bread, protein shakes, seaweed and free range. I guess the real credit goes to the birds who thrive under such diverse conditions
to make our lives better. It's truly an amazing animal that can thrive everywhere from the back streets of Bombay to penthouse roofs in Manhattan. I can't wait to hear more about all your experiences with your birds.

@Fire Ant Farm My FIL has ankle biter dogs too, they got ahold of his rooster similar to your story, roo was wedged where they couldn't get him out but did a number on his feathers and skin (back and tail mostly) he had more skin damage and less feathers when they were through. He healed and grew all his feathers back.

Holy smokes Mr. Jensen! Trying to use the "Kiss" method and "keep it simple stupid" has just become more difficult based on all the info you just provided me in this reply. It was truly informative but there has to be some basics to feeding that covers most of the bases? Too much info? No, but its a lot to absorb and follow for a novelist hobby farmer raising enough birds to provide eggs and table fare on a small scale. I hate shopping for feed supplies due to lack of knowledge on products and costs. I have learned that feed product variations and ingredients play a vital roll in the health and longevity of chickens. Not everything is contained within these products necessary for a well balanced diet. It doesn't fit for all types of poultry either! Even the most expensive and best of the best doesn't cover all the bases. But mostly, it does provide more than others. Thanks for clarifying some of these concerns.
