BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

I'm loving all of these stories. Ignorance may or may not be bliss...but it's a wonderful source of entertainment for those in the know. (And I've been the ignorant one more often than I care to recount.)

I'm ecstatic to say that I FINALLY have my aquaponics setup at least partially stocked with fish and the plants are now going in. It's been quite a battle with more than a couple "redos" of the work my hubby did for me, and once we got the system running smoothly we discovered that as of 2016 Arizona has banned owning and raising Tiliapia as they've now classified it as an invasive species. I was told, "Get goldfish" and "Get Koi", but the whole point of this venture was to raise my own food and those two ornamental fish simply don't fit the bill. I did manage to covertly acquire some Tilapia and am now doing all I can to convince Game & Fish to make allowances for aquaponics enthusiasts, but it's proving to be an uphill battle. Apparently they're convinced that all of our dry riverbeds will soon be overflowing with this invasive fish. I was even told by one employee that there haven't actually been any negative reports of Tilapia taking over AZ water systems, but since it's been a problem elsewhere (she specifically mentioned Australia), they don't want to take any chances.

It frustrates me how hard our government agencies work to keep people from growing their own food.

Is the ban is on just the Nile tilapia or all species used for meat- Mozambique and blue?

I think trout or some kind of salmon would work?? I found this issue pretty early on when I was fantasizing about aquaponics. You have to check the local regulations, and some fish do better in different temperatures of water, blah blah blah, which can make a huge difference in a local setup.

Bass, trout, shrimp, crayfish are some options.

Do some home work if you go with catfish they can jump from tank to tank and some can even crawl out of water for short distances also if they get in with your plants in a floating setup they will eat everything
Trout and salmon also like cool water like nothing above 27° Celsius or they start to die and they will eat smaller ones plus need higher oxygen levels
Eels can do well but are much like catfish
Goldfish are carp that have been bread to look good and are tought as my skull
Whatever you go with I recommend getting some cheap goldfish to start water off there is denitrofiing bacteria that needs to grow and with out it the amoina will kill your fish so better to loose $0.50 gold fish then something expensive or hard to get jest to start you off

Just set eggs from the CLs in the incubator. It's my first time hatching - so excited and nervous! Wish me luck! (And yes, I already have detailed records on each egg set...

Fire ant farm- good luck! How many did you set?

I have a couple of frozen whole tilapia in the freezer- anybody have any advice regarding how I should cook them? We don't have a barbecue.
Tilapia is one of my favourite fish. Unfortunately it's just too cold here to grow them commercially.

Tilapia have such a mild flavor I try to keep it simple, pan sear w/ butter, a little garlic powder and pepper and call it good.

Thanks! I set 16 eggs... We'll see how things go, unsure about fertility.

I marinate tilapia filets in olive oil and lime juice mixed with lots of chopped cilantrofor 20 minutes, then cook in a skillet briefly. Makes great fish tacos...
