BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

You can say that again. I'm TRYING to get a white tail feather gene out of my beilefelders but it is hard when all your cocks have it...

I've got the same problem with my breed. To make it harder, they start out with no or few white feathers in wings and tails, then after the 1st or 2nd molt, white feathers.

I still have 2 broody hens, Should I throw 6 eggs under each one so they will stop being broody in 21 days.

I wouldn't waste such a good opportunity if it was my hen!!! If you put an odd number of eggs under her I've heard you will get better hatch results.

But I don't know...

True since they are only eating and not producing. I might as well break them as they have been broody on and off all winter. I will put 5 eggs under each one tomorrow. I will also mark them as well. One hen was not happy with me taking her eggs today, yesterday, and all last week but I didn't have anything to mark them with today,,,I just put 56 eggs in the incubator that I just finished building a week ago with help from people from the BYC ... This is a test run before I fill it. It has 3 shelves but I am going to make 4 shelves after this hatch. It will hold about 225 eggs.

Who was it that helped you make it?

I had several people here help me with the plans. I took lots of pictures other than the part when building it as I went to a good friends house and was able to put the box together in about two hours since he has a wood shop. Then it was the staining and painting and what not that took the longest... I will make a thread later today and post the link to this site. I never made one but I need to learn to start a thread....

If you want "discussion on it" start a thread, if you want to do a "how to" write a article. I'll be looking for it.

Well, folks, I have an egg eater in my NN flock. I don't know who. I suspect it's my fault for not being prepared for them laying so early, and several eggs got laid outside of a nest box (and probably eaten).

Suggestions?
