BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

That's one pretty chick! And all these colours came from the Dark Cornish/cornish rock crosses?
It did. I believe both parents must have the lavender gene to throw the color. Then when expressed it dilutes the solid colors black to blue, red to buff.

You chicken people are crazy... not just you guys, but the ones over the years that named these colors.... this rooster is clearly not blue.... OR grey which is what people call blue..... he may carry blue genetics, but he's clearly red... I have no hope of ever figuring out chicken colors... horses are so much more simple...

You are absolutely correct, it's my mistake, the "carrying " blue fell out of the post- sorry for the confusion. That rooster would not correctly be called blue, he's just carrying the gene for the grey colour, which can be seen because his tail feathers are not black, but dark grey (at least it looks that way on the photo on my monitor). There are two genes that code for a dilution of black, they act differently so they have different names- one is called blue, the other lavender. Just to make it tricky, there is also a gene called silver, but that makes certain feathers white.

Well I got my Buckeyes a few days ago! I also picked up 2 Legbar pullets and "Lucky" the cross rooster. He's only 10 weeks and look how big he is!

OH WOW those Buckeyes are awesome!  Look how dark red they are already!  Nice legbars too- and Your rooster is indeed lucky- any idea of what his cross is?  Is there Legbar in him?

Thanks! Allwe know is he is half Australorp and thinking his mom was a Dixie Rainbow. I get all these chickens from fellow BYCers!

I know exactly what you mean! That's why I defer to @Kev all the time. I've learned that grey = blue or silver; lavender really isn't purple, red can be mahogany or more of an orange, white can be white, but not remain white in offspring if it is recessive instead of dominant, and poultry colors in general have very strange relationships with one another where one always seems to be working to suppress another. Even though my rooster has grey (blue?) in his tail feathers and laced on his chest, I see every shade of "copper" when I look at him. Hence his name, Copper. It was simpler for me that way.
