BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Everyone your birds and projects are amazing! too many to respond to one by one so this is a group congratulations to all of you! Very, very well done. lpatelski pretty soon Cobb is going to want to hire you for their breeding programs.

Whole foods fertile eggs? What would they be, and be a cross of?

I am anxiously awaiting some pips, due very soon in my incubator. I have too many eggs hatching, what was I thinking??????????? Well that's what happens when you buy a used Sportsman and stuff it full. I don't know how many will actually hatch but at lockdown they looked pretty good ..........
I asked about the breed/mix of the Whole foods eggs over on the Trader joe's & grocery store thread.

The answer was they will be
Hy-line brown hen http://www.hyline.com/UserDocs/Pages/BRN_PERF_ENG.pdf
X
Hy- line white rooster http://www.hyline.com/UserDocs/pages/36_PERF_ENG.pdf or http://www.hyline.com/UserDocs/pages/80_PERF_ENG.pdf

So they should be good layers.

I'm reaching a point of high frustration. I had minor surgery a little over a week ago and while feeling great and recovering well, I discovered yesterday that I managed to pull part of the incision open again, though the stitches are still intact. The surgeon instructed me yesterday to get good at doing nothing for the next two weeks.

Not only am I NOT good at depending upon my husband and son to care for the chickens, I've got a lot of plans that I need to be acting on now to keep us from getting overwhelmed as my recent hatches continue to mature....and I can't do a darn thing about it. I had finally reached the mental point of being ready to cull extra cockerels and hens, rearranging housing, etc. and instead I'm dead in the water.

Oh well....at least all of my spreadsheets look fantastic.

They should be excellent layers! Cheapest hatching eggs ever. It will be interesting to see what the eggshell colour will be, probably lightly tinted.

That's got to be very frustrating- I shudder when I think what would happen if I couldn't do what needs to be done- even being perfectly fine I can't keep up. Get well soon!
Any chance you could talk your doctor into getting an extra couple of stitches or some crazy glue so that you could do a few lightweight things? Sometimes there are options even though they tell you there aren't.

Yes, light brown for most of them. I have 17 pullets that started laying eggs last week.

Last year, two out of 7 laid white eggs.

I know exactly how this goes. When I was pregnant I couldn't do anywhere near as much as I wanted to with my flock, especially towards the end when I couldn't even see the darn things if they were near my feet. I ended up culling my flock by selling the unwanted females and giving the extra cockerels to the feed store. The feed store passes them on to a local guy who butchers them and gives the meat to needy families. I had to have my husband catch them which went something like: "That black one. NO, that black one right there! Right there! By the nestbox in the corner! No, that one's not even black!" I had a whole bunch of black chickens for him to sort out.

I hope you heal up quickly and master being an armchair dictator!

I tossed the WF eggs in just to fill space as a "why not". But after you told me what they will be I am more excited about them and hoping I have success with the hatch. The pullets will be great additions to the layer flock and the cockerels will be worth their weight in soup lol.

Here is my advice on getting through the next couple weeks...

1) Take a deep breath and accept what you can't help

2) Calmly sit your family down and explain that while some of the things you ask of them may not be important to them, they are important to you so please keep that in mind. Then remind them that if Mamma's not happy... they better

3) MILK IT FOR ALL IT"S WORTH!!! Think staycation.

Seriously though, I feel for you, I don't like being dependent either. Best wishes.

The Whole Foods pullets are bit bigger.

The cockerels make great soup!

I popped one into the crock pot already.

I bought 2dz Trader Joes and 2 Whole foods--They were $3.00 per dozen so they were very economical for sure.

She actually refused the glue suggestion, saying it would be better to heal "properly" since I'm already so stitched up. I've got a tube of the stuff here at home though and it's looking pretty darn tempting. Not that I'm in any hurry to be stuck with the responsibilities of doing laundry and washing dishes again, but I'm not even supposed to raise my arm, which makes it hard to do some menial tasks as washing my hair or putting on a T-shirt. (The incision is located in my right armpit, the entire width. She removed a mass the size of 2 golf balls, which she informed me about yesterday when I saw her. No cancer though, so it's all good!)
