Breeding process to get show quality chickens?

Any suggestion on some good genetic books to read on this?

I know that we are looking to buy some day old chicks from a breeder at $7.50/chick for my daughter's 4-H project. I know that this breeder has adult birds for $20 each. It might also depend on the area and the breed that you are intersted in as to the price.

$7.50 per chick seems somewhat high, and $20 per adult seems low.

I've seen "SQ" birds sold for as little as $20 and as much as $500, depending on the breed.

Good point. Does anyone know the ratio for how much a show-quaility chicken could cost? Or does it all depend on the breeder's price? Well, I know it would depend on the breeder...

The price of chickens is strictly determined by agreement between buyer & seller. Gold & oil trade on a world market & their prices are determined accordingly. Not so with chickens.
If you're willing to pay me $500 for a chicken that's what that chicken is worth. If I'm willing to sell you a chicken for $1 that's what that chicken is worth.
