Breeding, sex-links, how to?

How do you breed a sex link? The guy I buy my eggs from has a rhode island red rooster and mostly barred rock and white rock hens with a couple buff orps as well. Does a rir roo and barred rock make a black sex link? Thanks. He only charges $1.50 for eggs so I thought that might be a cheap way to start trying to incubate.

So are sex link roos good meat birds? If I understand correctly the links I would get would be black and red sex links with maybe some rir x bo mixes that wouldn't be sexable? Thanks for that great link.

BSL's will be better 'meat birds' than any purebreed cockrel will be. However, raising non-broilers for meat is always disappointed and the economics don't work out. You're better off buying organic, free range chicken than trying to raise heavy breeds for meat.
