ok if I am putting my purebreed birds together for a period of time to get eggs from them to hatch how long together before they are ready to incubate and can these birds be cooped without the sun for a period of time

Chickens display some undesirable behaviors if they are light starved, cannibalism and feather picking being being the biggest ones. They also may stop laying which would defeat your purpose entirely. If you put them in a coop for any length of time then you need to add supplemental lighting. It takes about 3 weeks for the eggs to become infertile after being in with a roo. If you have a mixed flock then I would wait the 3 weeks to make sure you are not hatching any mutts and then start collecting the eggs for hatching after that period. You should have all pure breeds after that.

Good luck.
