Breeds that dig less? I may be on the verge of not having chickens!

I'm having a major problem with my chickens. I have 2 easter eggers and one black sex link and my parents are getting really irritated with their digging habits. We're only on a quarter acre and the three of them are making a huge mess. We let them free range all day, they're very spoiled. I've made a lot of suggestions as to containing them to one area of the yard, or building a run and just having them in that. However, my parents are finding fault with each of my ideas (though they are legitimate concerns). My next thought is to perhaps replace them with some bantams or (if there is such a thing) a different breed that might dig less. Do bantams even dig less? Or am I just hopeful because of their size that they would cause less damage? I've always wanted some silkies, do they happen to dig less? Any input would be greatly appreciated. I really love having chickens and would hate to not be able to...

I have heard that feathered feet don't scratch as much. Can't say from experience but that's what I've heard.

if they free range nothing you can do thats a chickens natures to dig scratch and look for bugs etc.. run would be the best if u dont want them to tear up your yard

All chickens dig in a few areas for dust baths. Some seem to dig to china when foraging. I found that the leghorn types dig more than large breeds which scratch the surface. If you supplied a sand box area that might limit their deeper digging. Mine have 2 areas they use to dust bath, one is in full sun under corner of deck and other is under an ornamental fir shrub during summer heat.

I suggest giving them a sand box too. Wouldnt hurt... mine LOVE playing in sand, especially when its warm outside and the sand is a little cool on their bellies.

As far as digging, just tell your parents they wouldnt be digging if there weren't creepy crawly bugs in the ground to dig up!
