BREWING BEER 101 & mastering it

I would love to hear the experinces brewing...   There are a bunch of Home brewing storefronts opening up locally.   I have been parusing them looking for different parts for Fermenting... Feed and Kiefer.

Chickens love kefir!  I add it to my FF to add pro-biotics, protein and calcium.  They sometimes get the extra kefir grains, but most of the time I eat them or give them to my dogs.

Those chickens seemed very afraid of something.

I think barley should grow fine here fall through the beginning of spring.  I have no idea how to harvest it or brew with it.

They were probably thinking, " what is that camera doing there" or "why did we just get let out of our coop" not afraid, perplexed at what is happening..

A neighbor was selling a beer bartender.. It keep's a small keg of only Heineken.. Have you ever used one?

Maybe we could grow them together ? I do need to figure out how to get our soil right with all the flock droppings..

Never used one, but I think my brother has.

Barley and hops? Barley is grass-like but hops are a vine and I think love heat and humidity. You are right about the soil with the droppings. It can sure burn things or change pH and other soil weirdness.

I'm getting ready to purchase some hops plants from a guy on eBay. I haven't had any luck with the rhizomes the two times I've planted them(they grow a spindly vine and then die) and he says he sells "crowns" or the whole plant, so we'll see...

I'm so interested to learn more about brewing beer, it's such a lovely process, not to mention tasty (if done right).

Next spring I plan to start some rhizomes. There is a place locally that sells them around March every year. We're definitely planning on planting Cascade. It does well in our climate and it's my favorite hop to work with. Love the flavor and aroma! Might do Willamette as well, depending on whether it does well here or not. More research into types will be done as the time gets closer!

What hops have you planted in the past? Could they have been types that don't do as well in your area?

And what hops are you planting this year? (Sorry about all the questions - I love hops and love brewing beer!)

The first time I planted hops I got them from Burgess online and they were called "Nugget", the second time I went to a local brewing supply company and he had ordered an assortment of rhizomes, I can't remember what I got from him.

I planted in the same place both times, and I'm thinking maybe that's not a good location. It was shaded in the morning and full sun in the afternoon. Also, we had grasshoppers everywhere that were eating them down to the ground almost as fast as they grew. That's one reason we got chickens, there are very few grasshoppers remaining so far this year.

The person I'm buying from on eBay has a bunch of different kinds of hops, so I need to figure out which ones will work in our zone before I order.

I've only used Nugget once or twice. I tend to use the types like Cascade that can be used for bittering or aroma. I also use Northern Brewer a lot for my bittering hops.

I think I saw on a brewers forum that hop plants like east or western exposures, but I'm not super sure. I'm kinda hoping so, since the place I'd like to plant mine is a north eastern exposure.

And glad those chickens are doing their job as bug control!! Good luck with the new hop crop!

We know the grasshoppers like the hops, do chickens eat them? I think chickens can eat plants even faster than grasshopper considering the size difference of the critters.

You all need to post pics of your plants as they come up.

Wish I'd known that grasshoppers like the hops (makes sense, I guess, if you look at the name). Lol!

When I plant my new hops I'll be protecting them from the chickies until they are established.

Can't wait to be able to post pictures. Hops are a really beautiful vine!

I Googled breweries in our area and found one that is great about letting us pick up the spent grain. I have to get it a few hours after they put it outside in a 55 gallon barrel (or it might start to go bad & attract pests). Still, I put it wet in ziploc bags and put it in the freezer. Still plenty to share with friends. The chickens like it. Just trying to cut down on the feed bill, and keep the biddies happy!

I think the brewery liked the idea of someone a) removing the spent grain right away; and b) giving back to the community. Yea!!!
