I've just hatched my first gosling and put it in a polystyrene box with a heat lamp. Does it matter that it spends its first days under continuous bright light? Seems a bit harsh.

I do prefer the red bulbs. The light is softer and calming all the way around.

I ask your question of the newborn baby section of the hospital too! LOL. Apparently, all is well with babies and with chicks.

Be careful your brooder is not something the chicks/goslings can pick at and devour. Also be sure there is sufficient room for the chicks to self regulate their body temperature by moving away from the heat to a cooler area of the brooder. Enjoy your chicks as they do not stay little for very long.

! Pleased to have you aboard! I've often felt the same - I'm with Fred's Hens and I go with the red light as well. Good luck to you!

What Fred's Hens said X 2. Welcome to BYC.

also be certain the lamp is well supported and cannot fall on top of the hatchlings. You don't want the babies to be able to reach it either and get burned.
