The feedstore just called and the chicks are there, unpacked and all looking good. I'm so excited!!! But, I am waiting til I've picked my 5yo up from school at 2pm (it's 11:30 here) to go get them, because I know he wants to be there. (Isn't that patient of me???)

Question, though. How do I bring them home??? Should I bring a cardboard box with a towel in it or something? Does it need a lid? Will they be warm enough without any extra heat (it's only about a 10-15 minute drive)?

These seem like silly questions, but I have no idea of the logistics!!!!

The feedstore will provide a small box with holes in it. If I were you, I'd take an clean rag or small towel for the bottom. When I got mine, they threw some shavings in the bottom but the chicks still slid around in the box and I wished I'd put in a little washcloth or something. You didn't say how many you were getting but their body warmth should keep the box warm enough. Maybe your son can hold the box on his lap to warm the chicks or cover them with a towel. They'll be fine. Do give them a drop of water from your finger as you put them into the brooder and show them where the water is.

Congratulations and have fun.

Thanks! I'll definitely take a towel. We're getting 10, that should be OK for warmth, right? I was thinking I could maybe take a hot water bottle to set the box on if it was a concern.
