It's about 45 degrees out today and we are going to get the chicks soon. They will have about a half hour ride home. We'll keep the heat going in the car but I'm worried home how to transport them. All we have is a 2x1 storage box with pine shavings in it...should we keep the lid on it to keep heat in?

Sine the car will be warm, they should be fine for 30 minutes. They might be happier partly covered, but I wouldn't cover them completely, as fresh air is always good and lots of pine fumes aren't. They also might appreciate a hand in with them, for something to explore. They'll be a bit rattled whatever you do.

You should be fine if the car is warm - I'd leave the lid on the box. I do remember something we did as kids in out cold house. We'd heat up a brick on the old wood stove, wrap it in a towel and tuck it under the blankets - kept it toasty warm all night. Not suggesting your chicks need that - but it's kind of a cool thing to remember. Good luck to you and congrats on your chicks!
