And, welcome to BYC.

Well, yeah, I did lurk for a year and a half to get my bearings.

Nice of you not to hold that against me!

Well, here is the picture of the eggs pipping. We had 7 in all. One was not fertile, and 1 died. Two of them hatched fine on their own. The others stayed just pipped with their beaks sticking out nearly 16 hours. They may have eventually hatched, but I wasn't taking any chances. The membranes were very thick, and so were the shells. I just started at that little hole they made and slowly worked around it making sure there was no blood. I took an unused soft craft paint brush dipped in warm distilled water and softened and brushed the membrane off their faces and went from there. I chipped small bits till I got half way down and put them in another warm incubator i already had warmed for them. They broke their own umbilical cords and dried and i put them under their warm eco glow warmer. I had bought a little toy dog sized snuggle and put in under the eco glow until they could walk safely. They are running around, pecking everything and eating us out of house and home! I'm totally in love with these babies. So glad i took the chance and got them out.

WOW... Congratulations! That is super!

I do have a question though. If you used the Brinsea Mini Advance, how did you put more than 7 in there? Did you not use the egg tray and turn manually every day?

So happy to see the photos, thanks for posting them!

Hi all,,

Well my first time using the Brinsea Mini Advance I would term an ok success. I set 6 Ameraucana and one Barred Rock/Ameraucana egg 21 days ago. Day 7 two were in fertile, and I had one early death.. 4 made it to lockdown and 3 hatched so far. The BRxAmer hatched first on Day 20 and two Ameraucana hatched this morning. The last blue Ameraucana egg is there still with no pip at all, and I think I see it moving ever so slightly.

My question is... Will the mini advance stop after 21 days or will it just continue to keep rolling under lockdown/hatching status. Perhaps I should fill the water cups again? I set the eggs at 10:30, so maybe I should call Brinsea and ask, as night time is coming soon.

ANy info would help,
THank you

Congrats on your first hatch, MB! So cool. Three little fluffy butts, and that one late bloomer who's gonna hatch soon!

I, too, wonder if the Brinsea just cuts itself off after hatch day, maybe someone knows here...

Are you going to be setting more eggs soon?

All the best,

Betty

FYI....

The Brinsea goes on and on.. didn't have to do a thing to it. I guess it figures we would keep some in there for a while until they are ready. I may have an issue with the little late day hatch. He seems to have what is called a "rough navel" Looks like a hernia, and he is still weak. Not standing too much. A good friend has told me sometimes they make it, and other times no. Now I have to run out and get a brooder light, and set up a little sick brooder for him as the gas house gang are all ready running around like kids on Spring Break in that brooder. Lil one would surely be picked on...

I'm on the 5th day of incubation on my second attempt at hatching. I just realized that I forgot to put water in my Brinsea Mini Advance, as instructed to check it every three days. It was bone dry. Do you think I have messed up my hatch here? My guess from my previous experience is that it must have run out yesterday, and ran dry till I just discovered it....

Boo... I candled all 7 eggs after 72 hours and had all healthy veining, and could clearly see the red dots. Hope all is well.

Any thoughts?

I hope some "pros" will answer you here. IMHO, you will do just fine. If your outside/room humidity was anywhere but "very dry" for the period that you didn't have water in the Brinsea, what you did by accident may have been the best thing.

I've got a few questions about the Brinsea Mini Advance, humidity and high altitude.

I recently lost an entire batch of eggs. Near as I can guess they were all lost between days 12 and 18. I'm in a very dry area, and we're at around 5,100 feet. I had eggs shipped from a good source that started and died, as well as two local turkey eggs that also started and died.

A friend was incubating at the same time, also with a Mini Advance, and hatched 5/7. He is about 550 feet lower and in an area with similar or a bit more humidity. His eggs were brought by car from 1,000 miles away (and 3,000+ feet lower in altitude).

I stupidly never actually checked humidity, though I know my friend did not either.

Would you hatching experts agree that humidity would have been my most likely culprit? If not, any other ideas? Any hygrometer suggestions for the little Mini Advance?
