This is my incubator! I only need to buy a good hygro/ thermometer with it and then I can get started.

About the brooder

what's best to use?

- a lamp that doen's give light but only heat ( it's said that tha's good because of the day/night rythem) and made out of porselin?

- a red heating lamp?

- a heating plate?

I can say, I have never seen one of those. Hmmmm...pretty cool! As far as a brooder....most anything will work. My first set of peeps, were brooded in a large cardboard box....with straw, and a red heat lamp....and of course food and water readily available. This year, we were luck anough to get our hands on a few large crates from where my hubby works. They are 4 x 4, and about 4ft tall. We are brooding 28 chicks in there...so far, they all seem happy. As they grow, we will be able to seperate them in the coop from the older hens and roos...for a few weeks. Good luck with your peeps! and enjoy!

Hi,

The incubator is originaly made by a company in GB but also selling in the US.
The main raison that I bought it is because is small and eays to clean. It's good voor 10 normal chicken eggs, about 12 bantam/ quail eggs and even pheasant, duck and geese eggs can go in here ( and some bird eggs to) the rest about this machine can be found at www.brinsea.com

About the brooder I am using a former rat cage but I still don't know what to use for warmth.

The rat cage, will be fine...depending on how many chicks you have..for a little while. Be carefull of the bottom...if it is a wire bottom...cofer it with paper towels. Thier little feet can get caught in the wires. For heat....I use a red heat light. They are not very expencive, and give plenty warmth. Have fun!

This is the cage/brooder that i will use for a short periode of time for 4/6 babychicks but for how long can they stay in here?

On the bottom I use towels for the first days so I can see how they poop and how the legs are devoloping, then I'll use hemperade.
