I have got a Brinsea Octagon 20 Incubator and it has 2 water wells underneath a plastic mesh tray. I read that when the eggs hatch they should not be on a mesh plastic floor so I put a piece of cloth underneath them on the mesh so that they have a better surface to grip - I read that it can damage their ability to walk/stand if they don't have something good to stand on in the first few hours. But, I am worried that this has affected the humidity because the eggs are not directly over the water trays, they are 'blocked' by the cloth. Does anyone think this will make a difference to the humidity? Has anyone else got this incubator and is having problems monitoring humidity? I don't know how to monitor the humidity and each time I open it to try to increase the humidity as they are due to hatch I worry I am losing it by opening the lid.
My eggs are due to hatch today/tomorrow and 2 have pipped but that was hours ago and nothing is happening which is making me worry that it is not humid enough - but I don't want to keep opening the lid. What should I do? Shall I just trust it is humid enough?

Don't open it. I have hatched many chicks on that plastic floor. NO PROBLEM. You can get a hydrometer from the pet store to monitor humidity. Mine was only a few bucks. I just set in in there with the eggs. You can find them in the reptile section.

Good Luck

Thanks for the advice. I didn't open it, and I had two lovely chicks in there this morning - a Vorwerk and an Ancona. I will just not bother with the mat for them next time then if the plastic is fine :)
