Wow, that's going through a lot of water. I wonder if that is more to do with location, or the 40 vs the 20
I believe the pump water chamber is the same between the both Octagons and the little 7 egg unit. The Octagon 40 has twice the volume of the 20 so, that right there doubles the water usage in most cases.
Ambient humidity will also affect water consumption and, ANYTIME you lift the lid expect a big water pump surge to replace the humidity (and heat) lost, especially when you consider the larger volume of the Octagon 40.
For anyone interested, I would say the Octagon 40 is really too big for most "hobbyists" and informal breeders. When you are talking about incubating ~40 chickens, ~120 quail, etc. I think you are really past the point where small backyard and self sustaining farm users will see the benefit of the larger unit. Myself, if I could have justified the expense of a cabinet incubator, that is where I would have gone and, probably will go in the future, relagating the Octagon 40 to specialty hatches.
