I have my first batch in my Brinsea Octo 20, and I got the Spot Check thermometer. This Spot Check is deadly accurate, I guess. It's measuring the following readings, in three different positions around the --chicken--eggs: The eggs are on their 7th day.

With the probe at the bottom of the eggs it reads about 98.0 - 98.9 F
Halfway up to the top -mid-egg- it reads about 99.3- 99.7 F
Even with the top of the eggs it reads about 100.3- 100.8 F

I figure since it's within the best chicken range in the middle, it's all around okay??? I've never measured the eggs in three height positions with an accurate probe before.

It's about a degree less on all readings towards the two back corners.

Has anyone else done this with their Brinsea Octogon, and if so, what has been the reading & the result?

Yes, the eggs are developing. A few embryos have died, but that batch had very rough handling during shipment also. All are shipped eggs.

I just had a better than successful hatch in my eco20 and I DID NOT go digital!!! I trusted the glass thermometer that came in the unit and made sure it was steady at 99.5, a few days before going into lockdown I did increase it by one degree to 100.5 and let it ride it out till the end of the hatch. I set 25 eggs, out of the those 1 was not fertile and I only lost 1 egg part way thru incubation. Yes out of 24 viable eggs I hatched out 23 beautiful babies, IMO that is phenomenal hatch rate!!!!!

I also only filled one water channel thru incubation and then both for lockdown and had steady 40's for incubation and 70-80's during lockdown.

My problem with digital is, how do you really know they are accurate??? You can have three different digitals and all three will ready something different.

Which one is right, you are suppose to be able to trust it but can you?? I feel that glass is still the more trusted method, besides allot of medical facilities are required to use glass thermometers for their medical supplies that require correct temperature.

I just rest it again this morning and it is running steady again at 99.5 we'll see how this set turns out in 21 days!

Mines the same with the spot check. I go by a gap in the middle of the eggs half way down and make sure its not actually touching an egg. The glass thermometer reads 100.5 but as long as it says that I know by the spot heck that that means its around 99.5 at the eggs.
My last hatch I incubated in the brinsea and hatched in the hovabator for extra space and it worked perfectly. I have duck eggs in the brinsea right now on day 23 and although the shipped ones suffered casualities from shipping, my own eggs are all developing perfectly. Love it...

I have the Eco and the Spot Check too, and my readings are almost identical to yours!

I keep my 'bator at 99.6 (according to the Spot Check) at egg-level, which ends up being about 101 on the glass thermometer up on the top, which is about 100.3 according to the Spot Check. I don't trust that glass thermometer that comes with the Octagon 20 Eco - I have two Ecos, and I've compared both of my glass thermometers and they read a full degree apart when placed side by side in the same 'bator.

I have used both the thermometer and the spot checks (which I used for years). Both are accurate. The spot checks are one of the more accurate digitals in my opinion, but the mercury is more accurate. I have four of the Eco 20 now and I am just going to go to just the mercury. It is just more accurate in my opinion. I have the mercury at about 99.5-100 right now and have a 100% hatch going right now with 26 bantam duck eggs (which are very hard to hatch).

Octo 20 Eco update: I love my Spot Check. However, my Octogon 20 is going back to Brinsea tomorrow. On the 8th day it had a temp spike during the night (?) and the next day my 20 pre-ordered eggs from Boggy Bottom B's were all dead. Luckily, I had 6 more of his eggs in my Mini Eco, and they're all fine. Brinsea will refund all my money because of this problem. I'll just go with two more Mini Ecos for now.

Oh, no! How sad. It must be a faulty thermostat or something. I have had six Brinseas now and all of them held the temp. very stable. How frustrating for you. I'm glad they are standing behind it and letting you return it.

My glass thermometer in my Eco is waaaaaay off!

According to the spot-check my temp is 99.8 at egg level and the glass reads 110!!
