Hi all was wondering when would it be best to raise these turkeys through incubating eggs ready for Christmas.
They will have a large coop and an acre of land to roam so will be free range.
Any suggestions when to purchase would be great
Many thanks

Around 16-24 weeks before you plan on butchering them is when you should acquire them.

I've never kept any, but I don't think they are temperamental. They aren't the most active birds, as they weigh so much they can't run, perch or fly. However, this doesn't mean they are always tame.

Turkeys, however, can be very friendly, especially if given lots of little treats when you come visiting. They will even learn to come when called, which makes it easier to catch them, count them, sort them, ect.

I have a 1 year old BBB Hen "Mars". She's my lapper sets on the edge of the couch or on my lap and watches TV with me, she also goes for short walks down to the work shop to watch me sharpen saw chain or work on my log trailer. I know she doesn't have long to live and will be saddened by her loss, she has been a great therapy animal for me since I have some issues stemming from my time as a volunteer firefighter (wish my head could forget what my eyes have seen).

The only time she has gotten temperamental was tonight when we brought home a rescue heritage Black Spanish Tom, she whooped on him pretty good and hasn't really talked to me since. It really depends on how you raise them. They can be the sweetest most loving, and expressive animals you will ever know. I love my hen with all of my heart.

Sounds to me that you'll love it with all your taste buds too :D

I had several BBB last year that I raised for Thanksgiving and for Christmas. I thoroughly enjoyed raising them. Enjoyed having for dinner too. Easy to raise, and eat's less than my chickens. I am now raising some heritage standard bronze and have three hatching as I am typing. If a turkey would lay eggs like a chicken (most of the year) I'd completely do away with my chickens and go strictly turkeys.

She's not for eating. I couldn't do that to her after everything she's showed me, besides she is a good educational animal at the school. This new heritage tom is neat but not nearly as neat as Mars is she rests her beak on my shoulder at night and has helped me through some pretty dark times this past year

Its so amazing how any animal can become such an incredible companion, no matter their shape, size, or species. I know that holding a little chick, which it is too weak to be with its mother, certainly helps me feel calmer and like I always have a purpose.
