About half of my flock of 15 are losing weight - acting normally otherwise. They’re on layer feed, free choice eggshell, run is construction sand, they go out to grass daily for about an hour when I’m with them. Get black fly larvae daily and snacks now and again - organic veggies, sometimes boiled eggs. I don’t see any eggs in their poop but I did see a bit of blood yesterday on one dropping. Nobody is fluffed up or acting lethargic.

What’s the best ‘catch all’ dewormer?

There is also Safeguard (fenbendazole). You can't give this one to molting chickens though.

Is there a way to take some samples of poop to your vet for a fecal float to see if worms are a problem?

You will not be able to see worms eggs in the poop, they are too tiny for the naked eye to see.

How much weight are they losing? Have you weighed them? It would be good to weigh the ones you feel are losing weight so you have a baseline to go by, then weigh them at least once a week and track it.

How old are they? Are they molting? Often hens can look like they have lost weight during molt.

If you feel they need deworming, you can use Safeguard Liquid Goat Dewormer (Fenbendazole) or Valbazen (Albendazole). These 2 will treat most worms that poultry have except for Tapeworms.


Safeguard dose is 0.23ml per pound of weight given orally once a day for 5 days in a row.

Valbazen dose is 0.08ml per pound of weight given orally once, then repeated in 10 days
