Saw on Tucker Milling's website (brand I use now) that they have a new poultry grower/developer. When the co-op got some in, I bought a bag and before I let the guy put it in the car, checked the tag. Well, it said "Broiler Grower/Developer" not poultry grower, as their webpage wrote it. I had them take it back till I could do some research. Their page also says it can be used as a starter feed since it has 19% protein. It was over $2 more than the starter I use, but the starter is medicated and I have teen chicks and hens living together and don't want the medicated feed.

My question is this: if this is the only choice I have in a grower feed, is it okay to feed to my older hens who are living in the same coop with the teenage D'Uccle bantam trio? I don't want to fatten them up, by any means, and if it's for broilers, will it be too much for the older hens and the chicks? That fat is really high for them, in my opinion.

My only other current choice in a grower feed is Purina's Game Bird Flight Conditioner at a different feed store, also 19% protein. I know the feed stores and the county co-op think I'm nuts for being so picky, but it's served me well so far.

Here is the info:

Also on their site, a game bird grower, but it has meds in it:

33220 Commercial Quail & Gamebird Grower

Crumble...50#

Active Drug Ingredient

Monensin …..73 g/ton

Guaranteed Analysis

Crude Protien…….Min 20%

Crude Fat…….Min 3%

Crude Fiber ……..Max 5%

I can use Rockin Rooster Booster small pellets from Southern States which is 20% but the bantams are used to crumble and tend to shun the pellets so far.

Personally, I like the TSC Game Cock Conditioner. It has whole grains and pellets.

Crude Protein (min.) 17%, Crude Fat (min.) 3%, Lysine (min.) .7%, Methionine (min.) .25%, Crude Fiber (max.) 4.5%, Calcium (min.) .45%, Calcium (max.) .95%, Phosphorus (P) (min.) .4%, Salt (NaCl) (min.) .05%, Salt (NaCl) (max.) .55%.

I mix it in with the Flock raiser and then once they start laying, into the layer feed at a 2 to 1 ratio.

I tried the Rockin Rooster Booster for a few months and they wouldn't eat it at good levels. And, my birds are used to pellets.

So, I've gone back to what works. Of course, if there was a decent mill in the area that made fresh feed, I'd use that. But for some reason there isn't one in this area of KY

In PA, I had feed milled fresh. But, I still added the Game Cock Conditioner.

Yes. TSC has their own version. the kicker is, most stores don't stock it so you have to have it special ordered.

I'll check with the Murphy TSC. I never buy feed there so no idea what they stock generally.

ETA: Omigosh, I called them and they do have one bag but it's $21.95. Can't afford it. The Knockout Game Bird feed is only $11. 50 at the co-op. Was hoping the TSC one would be $15 or under, but no such luck. How much is it where you are, Sarah?
