We are raising broilers, as we have in the past. This year, we've had two die suddenly, one found on its back, the other on its side. Both had breasts that were a purplish-red colour, and both had something that looked like a rubber ball (for lack of a better description) protruding from their vent. I could take a picture, if that helps at all.

Are they dying of heart attacks? We've never had this happen before, and this is the first year they've had access to food all day long. Previously we've fed them twice a day. I know broilers can essentially eat themselves to death, so has our "new" method lead to premature deaths? They are eight weeks old this week.

Most likely. If they died at 8 weeks old and have access to food all day, then its most likely heart attacks, sudden death syndrome a.k.a "flip over disease". Restrict feeding to twice a day and no more than 17-18% protein after 3 weeks.

I have heard at 8 weeks, you need to butcher or you will be loosing more of them. But this is my first time.
I'm raising mine to 10 weeks old. They should have a final live weight of around 10 pounds and a processed weight of about 6-7 pounds. Restricted feed schedule and lower protein is key to success!
