My hen has either a broken leg or hip. I have her inside keeping her warm, but what else can I do? I have her in a small cage with slip resistant flooring so she can maybe move a little. She seems to be getting worse but should I let her try to walk or keep her up? Thanks for any help.

What happened?

How do you know it is broken?

Going to have to give us more info for us to try to help.

Keeping her seperate and warm and calm is a good start.

Give us the following information. The more you tell us, the better we will be able to help you.

1) What type of bird , age and weight.
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
3) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
4) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
5) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
6) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
7) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
8 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
9) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
10) Describe the housing/bedding in use

She is a mixed hen. She is about 3 months old. Maybe weighing around 2 pounds. They are free range in my yard that is fenced in for them, lots of trees and bushes they can get in and hide. There is no sign of any injury, poop is normal. I found her laying by herself and I tried to catch her she tried to run off but had little use of her legs. I caught her and put her in a small cage to keep her from moving. I have a slip resistant pad down covered in shavings. She is able to move her left leg but her right leg is stuck out in front of her and is cold. I tried to move it under her and she bit me. She is eating and drinking fine. I am going to treat her myself because there arent any vets around her that will deal with chickens. She is acting ok, but cant move. She tries to but doesnt get anywhere.

* Wow, wish you had an A/V handy-- Sounds like an x-ray is in order. Darn! Have you checked Echo Haven Parrot rescue site? Toolady keeps a list of Avian vets by state. That was where we found the one we used. 5O miles away, but better than nothing. Maybe it's just dislocated? (Hoping)

If her leg was broken, it would be hanging at a really funny, unnatural angle, and be floppy.

There are alot of things that will cause a sypthom like you've described.

See if you can feel around her hip to see if it is dislocated, use the other hip for comparison.

Try moving the leg through the range of motion (but put her head under your arm if you think she'll bite)
