Broke the lid to waterer, how can I fix? *update!*

I cannot ever get the dern galvanized ones to not keep spilling over. They just run and run and run until all the water is gone. Makes me so darned mad! un

I wish it was as nice as those, its was poly fount, like the 5 or 7 gal dura fount only 3 gal, my husband has been brainstorming on ideas to make that plastic lid work again and not toss the $28 it cost! I saw on MurrayMcMurray that you can buy replacement lids for the 5 and 7 gal dura founts, need to find out if they are the same size, they look a lot alike!​

I have probably the same kind of plastic waterer as you. I am not thrilled with it. I have to crank the lid so tight to get a vacuum seal, I am not at all surprised that yours cracked. It's near impossible to get the lid on tight enough because I can't get leverage on the smooth plastic body -- the only handhold is the little knob for holding the bottom cap, and that's not big enough. If I had limited hand strength or arthritis, it would be completely impossible.

If your feed store operator won't make good, call the manufacturer. Tell them that you are extremely disappointed with the product, and would like to know how they intend to satisfy you. (I would accept nothing less than a brand-new lid. If they send you a new unit of your money back, that's even better.) These things should not spontaneously break with normal use. And please -- report back on your experience with the manufacturer, by name.

Brandywine, you must have the same waterer! I too had to crank it down, and even with the inside of lid and the o-ring well greased I really struggled to open it. I would put my knees on the white plastic part to get enough leverage to open the cap. The feed store operator is supposed to call tomorrow after his sales rep comes in, if he does not call I will give him a days grace and then call him again, and then manufacturer. I only had the thing a month, I opened it once a week to clean and refill, thats 4 miserable openings. Besides the main break around the middle, the top of was full of spider cracks. I didn't keep it in the sun, it was in the coop. I'm already happier with the galvanized!

The feed store that I "used" to go to, said that the sales rep said that they could not replace the lid, I thought that was kind of crummy! Its a Little Giant, made by Miller Mfg., 3 gal, so I called Miller Mfg today and what a pleasure the customer rep was! No problem, new lid on the way! She also appologized for the inconvience of it all, wow, customer service, what a great concept!
