Broken beak... How serious? Update: adjusting well!

Again thank you!!! Very encouraging! She is doing really pretty well. Still favors her scrambled eggs and grits, but she ate some cheese and moistened food pellets. She seems to be feeling much better and not in much pain as she is cleaning her beak often after eating. She just really hates being caged. Thought maybe I'd bring her in a little friend for a playdate this afternoon. Hope you roo continues to do great! The fake fingernail thing is really funny. I hadn't thought of that yet, but I had considered trying to fashion a little porcilin beak prostetic, LOL. The problem is that really is no where to attatch anything because she broken it clear back to her nostrils... She really seems to be doing fine. I guess at this point I will just continue to watch for infection and keep close tabs on her weight!!! Thanks again! Love all my chicken accomplises!!!

They adapt amazingly well to beak injuries. I have a serama rooster who had his bottom beak fall off due to a fight with another roo thru a fence. It's been over a year now and his hasn't grown back yet. IMO Its much easier for them to adapt missing the top beak because they still have the bottom for scooping up the feed. Mine spent a few weeks in the house with me learning how to thrive with his new handicap. I am happy to say he is alive and well and at the top of the pecking order in his enclosure.

She is doing really really well. I put her out for 'recess' with her friends and she pecked for scratch with the best of them and seemed to be able to get pieces. She's out in the coop but segregated just her and the hurt rooster inside the coop.... And still getting eggs and grits. LOL.
