My girl, Gemma, managed to break the tip of her beak. I was not able to save it, and it fell off. She did bleed a bit, but I finally managed to get it to stop. She is isolated from the rest of the flock. She is also starting to molt. She is not really interested in food right now. She has had some very small pieces of apple and managed to gulp down a baby frog while out ranging. I have offered layer crumble mixed with a bit of water. She pecks at the food, but it seems like her depth perception is off and she is not able to take in much. She is drinking water but not a lot. Can I offer her NutriDrench or Poultry Cell to help boost her over the hump? She is mostly tucking her head and sleeping. She does perk up and get vocal when I get close to her enclosure.

how long ago did she break her beak? How long ago did she eat the baby frog? Anytime one of my chickens eats something big like a frog, lizard, mouse etc. they don’t eat much if anything for the rest of the day and find a cozy corner to sleep while they digest it.

She broke the tip off yesterday. I quickly isolated her and stopped the bleeding. I set up water and a mash for her. She tried to eat some but was not making contact. I tried to hand feed but that was a bust. She ate the frog(very small) a couple of hours ago and had a couple of very small cubes of apple after that.

The frog was maybe the size of the tip of my thumb. We have a lot of new ones since the heavy rain last month.

Keep her with the mash, but between the frog and broken beak she probably won’t eat anything for the rest of the day and since she ate the frog I wouldn’t force her. Tomorrow she might eat more, but broken beaks are very painful. It would be like us trying to eat after our lips were ripped off…we probably wouldn’t want to eat for a bit.
