This spring I bought some peas at auction, it was very stressful for them. They were jumping a lot in the pens and three of them broke about 1/4 inch of their top beaks off. They have recovered except for the broken feathers but still leaves me with a question:

Will the beaks grow back?

Poor guys, can they eat OK?

Yes, they can eat just fine. I suppose if the feed is piled deep it is easier for them but they have been broken for a couple of months now. They have been getting ferment every morning and evening as well as having crumbles available at all times. They may have been the source of my Coccidiosis outbreak and they also came with a load of vermin. The secondary respiratory problems are a result from being stressed from the cocci, or so the vet tells me.

Every fall I have to trim some beaks, only the tips of the top part. I also trim toe nails at the same time if needed, and shoot a dose of safeguard down their throats while I'm at it. I think my Peas have come to the conclusion that this is a day spa and I am nothing more than a glorified nail tech, as they seem to be getting awfully lazy with their personal hygiene and grooming.

This tells me the beaks do grow continuously, so I would think they should eventually grow back for you.

So they broke their beak off after you got them?

I have seen where some folks clip and i guess cauterize the beak so it will not grow back to prevent pecking and those do not grow back most of the time, it is the same thing as dehorning a goat or cow or debeaking a hen.

Can you post a photo?

I really hope that you don't think that I would be capable of doing such a thing. No, these poor birds were left in two 3 x 6 cages with ten birds per cage. The seller left them at the auction early in the day with no food or water, foot traffic around them all day and little kids pulling feathers when they got a chance. I chased a few of them off when I saw them doing it.

The poor birds spent most of the day bouncing their heads off the top of the cage and more than one had bloodied them selves, broken beaks, and hurt legs. It was way after dark before they could be divvied up and removed from the auction site. Some of them are some pretty impressive birds but they have had a rough life and it shows on some of them. The guy that owned them must have not had the proper roosts as half of them have toes frozen off and a couple of them have bare spots. Rest assured they are in a MUCH better place now.

I just wondered if you knew for sure what happened cause you were there or did you just notice it and just thought that is what happened

cause i have seen photos of birds posted on this forum that had their beaks altered, i will find a photo, the member purchased them this way cause he posted them the day he bought them.

Unless they have broken them off far enough back to interfere with the growth area it will grow back. I have a cubalaya cross that broke his off twice now and it no longer grows back. I have to make sure he has a deep feed source and I occasionally trim the lower beak.
