Hi 👋🏻. I read your response and my son rescued a rooster that has a similar problem except we don’t know what happened to this rooster and why his poop keeps getting stuck on the inside & outside of his vent. My son has soaked him in water & epson salt for about 1-2 hours every day for about 2 weeks now so the vent area is completely clear of all poop but if we don’t soak him everyday it starts to build up again. He’s lost many feathers on his legs I think because of the soaking but thankfully we live in Hawaii it’s warm here now. Any ideas on Medicine or treatment to easy the soaking and allow him to poop normally? Thank you in advance!

Sorry about your rooster. I don’t know that I can help. What does he eat, and does he have grit or small rocks to help his gizzard work? Has he been drinking plenty of water? Is his crop in his upper right chest empty, full, hard, or puffy? Has he been able to ppop, and what does it look like?

I would use a disposable glove, and lubricate it will vaseline or oil, and insert a finger inside his vent to feel for any stuck droppings or an obstruction. You may have to remove that.

I would also use some chilled coconut oil and chop it into small pieces, and feed him about a tsp of that. Mineral oil or olive oil would work too. Get him drinking plenty. It might be a constipation problem, or he may have a blockage in his digestive tract.

He eats a protein based rooster feed from the feed store. He also has an assortment of veggies fruits and meal worms once a week. I can assume the feed has grit in it but I will double check and if not I will add to their feed. He drinks clean water every day and I’ve never felt his crop before but I see it empty before I feed him than it’s full looking after I feed him. I will actually feel it today and check. When he poops it’s greenish sometimes splatter patter sometimes like like regular poop. I will let my son know to Vaseline his finer and try to feel inside for any stuck poop. We’ve given him coconut oil mixed in his feed before but I will try feed him chilled coconut oil later today.
Thank you for your input. We’re willing to try almost anything to give him some relief.
