Hi gang. My son rescued a chicken and his vent is not functioning well. Every day it gets clogged inside and outside the vent. My son soaks home in warm water with epson salt which does relieve the caked on mess but now since he’s been soaking him for about 3-4 hours every day for 2 weeks now the poop is t so caked on but now he’s loosing his feathers. Someone suggested Vaseline which we’ve tried but it doesn’t help. Also someone suggested on feeding him coconut oil (which he loves) but that doesn’t seems to be helping either. I’m open to any/all suggestions. Mahalo in advance 🤙🏼

He has grit in his feed. I happen to find someone else’s post about a prolapsed vent and we’ve been doing what they suggested (coconut oil, soaking, wiping) but haven’t tried the hemorrhoid cream yet.

He's not prolapsed. He's just having a pooping issue. Have you added any probiotics in his water?

He might have vent gleet. There sometimes can be a buildup of urates (the white part of the poops) which can cake up around the vent. Also sometimes there can be papillomas or small growths from viruses that can be just inside the vent. The latter might be removed with a gloved finger digging out the chauky urates. The papillomas, if that is what is happening, may be removed by a vet. It is hard to know what is going on with his vent, whether it is constipation, advanced vent gleet, or what. Vent gleet can sometimes be treated with antifungal drugs, but a vet might be helpful. I wonder if he was having the problem before he was rescued.

Never thought of that.
