Broken Feathers

I don't think putting a saddle on her will draw negative attention from the flock. For one thing it will protect her somewhat from the roosters spurs, and also allow new feathers to come in. Putting a saddle on the alpha hen might be a good idea . If she doesn't like the saddle she will be too preoccupied to cause any feather picking herself. Just don't get RED saddles, chickens are attracted to red. Actually, a nice, blah, boring color would probably fit in best.

X2.

I used a pair of nail clippers and clipped the very tip of the spur (my roo only has one, but it's long and sharp.) then I used a mettle nail file to smooth it out. it worked pretty well, since I didn't get any more torn backs.

I've used the same technique on rooster spurs and it works well.

Alright! thank you all for all the help and advice. I have a few saddles coming in the mail and will put them on a few of the alpha girls too just to be on the safe side. I will also file those spurs down! Again thank you all so much!
