Broken Foot

I need some ideas. I bought 4 white Pavlovskaya chicks that came in a mixed breed box from Greenfire. They are about 7 weeks old. About a week before I went to pick them up, a hawk tried to pull one out of its pen through the wire. The result was a broken foot and a bite to the top of the beak. The bite it not worrisome and is healing fine and is very small. That foot however is pretty mangled. No external injuries but a couple of toes curl sideways when I try to move the foot. The whole foot is very stiff and doesn't seem to be able to curl around anything for roosting. I suspect maybe it has fused together badly by this time. Any hope? What do you think?

Does he seem too be in pain? Can he move very well?
She hobbles, doesn't really use it for anything except balance. She doesn't react at all when I touch it and move it around, but I imagine it has to hurt or she would use it more.

Hi @MonicaWA

Can you post some photos of the chick and the foot (I really want to see what he looks like :))

If the foot was not set/taped or treated when the injury occurred, then it may have healed to the point it can't be corrected.

I will try to get a decent picture. She is feather-footed so it will have to be a great pic or you won't be able to see much. One toe had been splinted, but the damage seemed to be to the whole foot, at least to me. Since she is growing so fast, I worry it has healed all crazy in a week. I have been trying to massage it very gently to see if there is any loosening it up, but it is stiff, except for the toes that curl the wrong way.

What a cutie pie!
You could try taping/splinting them to see if they can be straightened out. Chickens heal fairly quickly, so the bones may have already set.

I had one that broke her toe - I saw her do it, she knocked it against a piece of wood and the toe just dangled. I did my best by taping/splinting, but it healed sort of crooked:(
She did fine and it didn't seem to bother her once it healed.

Your girl may have to be classified as special needs and have a lower roosting bar. I just don't know. Hopefully you can start working it to where she can use it.
