Yes, I've had a broken bone. The girl's leg is definitely broken. I splinted it right away, good ole First Aid has come in handy. But I have to remove the splint to make sure it is not infected, I'll wait another 30 hours.

My question was to hennyhandler, who asked in post number 9, "How do you know if a chicken has broken a leg? I have had a chicken with a limp for awhile now and there has been no signs of any problem besides the limp. I thought it could be broke but I thought she wouldn't be able to walk on it after doing some research."

I have had a broken wrist and it would just flop. Is that what you mean? I would think that that is what it would do but after hearing about the limp I thought to ask.

Yes, that is what I meant. When they "flop", they won't heal very well unless splinted.

Hi,
I have a question, would the bone of the leg
that is broken show through the yellow skin ?

Like when a rabbit breaks a leg the bone shows thru ragged
and busted.

Don't know about rabbits, but I guess it would depend on the severity of the break. If it were a hairline fracture, maybe not, but I'm not a vet.

My experiences with chicken fractures are limited to three... One had a broken femur that "flopped". I tried to splint it but it was too high, so she didn't make it. The other two were open fractures of the wing. I amputated one and splinted the other, both are alive and well.

It appears that she tried to walk on it before I got to her. The bone doesn't show but the skin is broken slightly around the break. We removed yesterday's bandage and I put some peroxide on it and re-splinted it by bending a small piece of cardord along the ribs and binding it around the leg with metal twisties. It looks better. I hope she can use the foot but it is limp right now.

She needs to be isolated I a very small cage so she can't move around, feed lots of protein and keep quiet for 3 weeks, no kidding! The leg has to heal up. Be patient, it works.

Ok and what if it is a snapped tendon?
