"broken neck " disease? UPDATE- Help

Chick is getting worse!!! How do I administer the Vitamins.



I just got a new chick I was told has broken neck disease. She has a permanent right angle to her head and walks sideways. I paid a dollar for her. Is there a quality of life thing I need to worry about like with the little cross beak I have.


He seems to be still doing ok today

does it set and look like it is looking up in the air all the time and does backflips? if it does give it 3 drops of poly vi sol (baby vitamins) without iron. it is called crooked neck or wry neck it is caused from a vitamin deficiency.

its wry neck as the last post said give poly vi sol infant vitamin drop without the iron. Some come out of it and some dont. According to how severe and if they can eat and drink.

This little 5 day day old was the last wellsummer in the barrel. When I got it home it tried to eat and did drink some. My hungry little sultan with the cross beak pushes everyone away from the food. I think I will feed her separate.

How do I administer the Vitamins? The chick seems to be getting worse. I just spent $12 on them I sure hope thety work.

When I'm not sure if a chick (or even adult chicken) can drink enough on it's own, I do this...

- first drip the beak in the water treated with the vitamins or medication. Watch for the beak to move and for bird to swallow. If the bird drinks, then repeat about 6-8 times, allow about 10 seconds between each drink.

- if the bird does not drink, then I go to a dropper. (A typical medicine or bottle dropper.) I drop water onto the side of the beak first. Often when it trickles in, they start to swallow. Again, repeat, but allow a few seconds in between.

- as a last resort if they still don't swallow, I open the beak and drop water into the mouth using the dropper.

Use the dropper and put the Poly vi sol vitamins directly on the beak...try to put a drop right on the side of the beak in a way that it will roll in and she can drink it. If you just put a few drops in the water, it would take a long time to get the amount she needs to correct the deficiency. Best Wishes!!!!

I have had a couple chicks with wry neck. You need to separate it, keep it warm, and I would give about a quarter dropperful 2 x a day for as long as needed and atleast 7 days. I also make a wet mash with the chick feed. Wet it and hold the chicks head upright, gently open the beak and put in mouth. Keep a q-tip close by--sometimes the food may get set in the back of the throat and you will need to gently push it down. I have never lost a chick to wry neck and have done this every time. I have had it so severe that the chick flips on it's back..I have silkies and it ends to be more common in them. Good luck!!!
