Hi! This afternoon of my latest additions, "Button" broke her neck. I have no idea how she did it. She was beneath the nesting boxes, just lying there staring at me. The nests are not high off of the ground, maybe 2 or 3 feet?
Two of my bossiest hens were in the nesting box when I first walked into the coop, and Button was very curious about exploring the nests. She also liked to sit on top of the nests. We culled her, I just wanted to know what could have caused this?
Thank you so much in advance! :)

Oh no. Are you familiar with wry neck or Torticolis? It is a twisted neck or neck bent down or up, and seen in different neurological conditions, including Mareks and head injuries, or vitmain E deficiency. A limp neck can be from botulism or Mareks disease.

Did you see her break her neck? I have observed a couple of chickens in the “throes of death,” who were seizing and whose necks twisted as they died.

Do you think she was injured or fell?

You know I was thinking earlier of how it could happen then when you updated, I was like yeah wry neck could have happened and she fell down.

Yes, one of my oldest hens died from wry neck a couple of years ago. No, I did not see her actually break it, but it did feel broken.
