Broken polish

Welcome to BYC, and glad to have you. I also have a lame hen who seems to be puttering along. I took a dog travel crate I had lying around out to the chicken pen, and put some fluffy bedding in it. She seems very happy to climb in there at night. I put a nesting pad in there made of what seems to be excelsior (shredded wood in sort of curly threads). Scratched up, this has made a very fluffy, soft bed for her that seems to make her more comfortable at night. I am pleased that she is still following after the other birds, and comes out to free range. But the boss hen has been pretty tough on her, and I think she enjoys having a safe place to rest. She will often lay eggs right in the dog crate.

Welcome. I have two handicapped hens. One of them cannot drink by herself or get around well - I rescued her....her splayed leg was never fixed and it was too late when she came to me- nor was her curly toe paralysis treated. The other survived a C1 fracture and has a dropped wing and cannot lift her head up - she moves her entire body. But she can eat and drink and get around on her own. She cannot get up and down roosts. She comes in every night to sleep in a crate next to the other one - and goes out in the morning. It has not effected her relationship with the flock at all.
