I know this has been posted before, but I came home today to find quite a bit of blood in my chicken run and one of my hens broke her toenail. I cleaned it well , but it is appears like a small piece of tissue or fiber is hanging now from where nail broke. I bandaged her up but what should I do with that part that is still attached. The surrounding nail is broken off 1/4 way down the rest of the nail is intact. She is fine otherwise. Is it tissue?

I'm not really clear about the injury, but I would think if you keep it bandaged the damaged part should heal or fall off. Hopefully you'll get a response from someone who has had this happen.

Just take off any dangling nail so it can't get caught and re open the wound and she'll be good to go in no time. If it's just the tip broken off, it'll grow back, else, she'll have a nubby toe nail, but it's not a problem.

I bet the fleshy bit is the quick. I agree with silkiechicken. if you find that it is bleeding again, some corterizing powder or corn starch will stop that bleeding faster than a bank bailout.

thanks for the responses. I did clean her well and bandaged to foot so it wouldn't bleed anymore and the bandage lasted through the night so hopefully all will be well. She's out running with the others now
