I have someone who has been on again, off again wanting to buy one of my Bronze Tom turkeys. I have raised this guy for 7 months now and he is a healthy, good sized bird. I really don't have any idea how much he is worth. I have been offered 25.00 for him and I have no idea if this is fair or not. Is there someone who might know the answer to this question?

With the increases in feed costs over the last couple of years, I am sure you have more than $25 into your bird. However, it is often difficult to recoup costs when selling live birds. Kind of weird, especially when selling a young bird with a lot of breeding potential. Market value is what market value is, however. It would not be out of line to make a counter offer. You may have upwards of $50 into a 7 month old standard bronze, just accounting for feed (if it is 30 lbs, its probably eaten about 150 lbs of feed assuming a 5:1 conversion for heritage turkeys). You would certainly be on solid ground to estimate your feed costs and ask at least that much. You may not get it, but you can ask!

From the buyers perspective, if I was looking for an adult turkey, and found one for $25, I'd snatch it up as a real bargain. So I think you could probably get a little more for it.

I agree, I have 2 bronze hens no tom and would snatch him up in a heart beat for $25.00. I just recently purchased a pair of black 7 months old and a pair of bourbon reds 2 years old for $70.00. I did not waste any time getting to her house to pick them up. $25.00 is too low for the time and feed you have invested.

That is low, unless you are just needing to get rid of it. It sounds like they are just letting you get the bird fatter until they pick it up.

I sell heritage turkey's. And mine start at $175. for a breeding trio. And that is the price I get. I sell most of mine as days olds.

(the day old aren't that price)

Oh he is so worth more than $25.00, think of all the effort and money you put in to raise him. I'm surprised your potential buyers haven't gobbled up the deal sooner! I would suggest $50-$60 at the very least.

Thank-you all very, very much! I really have no clue when it comes to this stuff. I never thought of selling any of them, when I purchased them. Yes, it very well could be that he thought he could get me to fatten the bird up before he came to get him. The guy has been good to me in the past, with help with animals and such, but still I know he is a wheeler and a dealer and I'm sure he sees me as an easy mark. Me thinks we are going to have a little talk...especially since he has already approached me for free stud service from my male pig. Lol, oh yes, I am so green it's scary but that can and will change rapidly.

One last question. Is there a place on BYC where selling birds or animals is discussed or a sticky with this info? It would sure be helpful in the future for people like me.

I wonder what your price would be now?
