I brought my first ever batch of 25 CX chicks home on 5/7 and put them in a 4x3x2 plywood brooder. I have about 2 inches of pine shavings in the bottom, covered with paper towels. They seemed to take to the feeder / water automatically. I had been changing out the paper towels twice a day. This morning I decided to take out the paper towels altogether. They went nuts, scratching and pecking at the shavings. Funny to watch, but should I be concerned that they may eat the shavings? How long should they remain on paper towels? Pic is from Friday when I brought them home.

Thanks - Tim

Thanks everyone! I never knew my food could be so entertaining! Also, I swear I can watch these things grow!

Yeah, you really can almost watch those feathers come in the first week! Getting sick from eat chips is one of those things that CAN happen, but you don't really have to worry about it. They all peck at them.

Like the others, shavings from day #1. Our 25 are a week old today. They are already stinking up the shop.. Can't wait to get them out in the run. They stopped being cute a few days back.
