Right now I'm using paper towels as the bedding, and hopefully wont have to keep them in this brooder much longer (as it's just a cardboard box) but what is another decent cost effective bedding I can use that they won't year to bits within hours?

Wood shavings is the most elective bedding, if you're hatching eggs under you're broody then u want it to be at least 3 inches deep so the eggs stay warm.

It's more of I have two three week old chicks who aren't ready to move outside, and I was given them without much preparation for taking care of them lol. I'm doing my best and plan to build/buy a coop soon though

Pine shavings are what I've always used from day one. Don't buy them from a pet store though, buy a big bale from a feed or ranch supply store.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply there is anything wrong with bedding from Petsmart or other pet stores, it's just too expensive IMO.

the cheapest I could find at Petsmart online is 2 cubic feet of cedar for $11.

I can get pine at my local feed store in bales, 11 cubic feet for $10. I'm a nurse, but I can still do that math.....

I'm cheap

X 2 - you *can* use the bedding from Petsmart, etc - but it is going to be more expensive in the long run.

Haha fair enough! I'm pretty sure I have a feed store somewhere nearby that I can go shop at! Thanks for the info :3 I probly should pick some up regardless especially if I plan on getting a few more chickens
