Brooder Box Help

You can take chicks out of the incubator as soon as they are dry, just remember if you have other chicks still to hatch and you open the incubator it could cause them to shring wrap inside the egg and be unable to hatch due to the loss of humidity when you open the incubator. That is why you leave all chicks in there untill all eggs that are going to hatch, have hatched. I would not go more than 3 days though from the time the first chick hatched, because it will be needing food and water.

Hi OP,

Fellow Jerseyan here. No need to invest much $ or time into a brooder. A card board box laid on the side so there is a smooth floor, will do nicely. Cut the top for access. I use regular light bulb for heat. Watch how the chicks react and adjust the wattage and height to achieve the desire effect.
If you are concern with the 24-7 bright light, use the "black light" (available in Home Depot).

In 4-5 weeks (?when the feathers come in?) and the warmer weather, they will be ready to go outside to the coop. The cardboard box can go to the recycling.

I just bought a 66qt container. I will need one after the chicks go anyway.
I'm not able to raise them to chicken and will be looking for new homes for them by the end of april if they do hatch...if any new jersey people want to add more RIR to their stock..I am not that keen into shipping live stock as I can not guarentee the postal service in my town. They have Shaken "Fragile" boxes right in front of me... Grrr.
