Have a ? about the brooder. By April 13th we r going to have at least 24 chicks from 3 days old to 2 weeks old. 1. Do we need to seperate the baby babies? 2. What size should the brooder be? Do we really need to have a foot of space for each chick? If we do we were going to rethink because we r just using a cardboard box and go ahead and get a sheet of plywood and build a bigger box. Will have to get some more heat lamps and such. What size shuold the box be? like a 5x5 area?

Last year I had 21 chicks in a 4'x3' wooden box. They did fine... but they were all the same age. Right now I have 7 chicks in that same box.... four 3 week olds, and three 3 day olds.... they got along last night but the big ones started trampling the babies this morning. Now I have the babies in a box within the box so they can share the light, and I will try every day to integrate them.... we'll see how long it will take. I'm also expecting new babies during the week, (6th - 10th) and hope to be able to put them in there as well.... I may have my hopes up too high.

We'll see.
