We've got the largest rubbermaid container we could find, but quickly our 8 baby chicks (2 weeks) are getting too big. Any idea how to make the existing brooder bigger? We thought about cutting a whole in the side and making a "tunnel" over to another box or another container to increase the space. Any suggestions?

I thought my 9 @ 2 weeks old were too cramped in a 45 gal Rubbermaid also.....

....I put them in the master bath garden tub for 2 more weeks

and then they went out to the closed coop with the heat lamp!

We started our first batch in the bathtub of our spare bathroom. They quickly outgrew the space, so DH built them a box above the tub that has worked great for 3 batches of peeps. It's nice because 3 of the 4 walls are made by the bathroom walls, and he made a screen that we can put on the front to keep them from escaping.

Here's a pic of our setup just before we put the peeps in this year. We had some cardboard set up to split the box in half for the first week, since they didn't need the whole space yet.

And here's a pic with the peeps at about 2 weeks:

We have an unfinished basement, and have used lots and lots of cardboard. Breaking down old boxes, cardboard floor, cardboard wall, built into a corner. There is that brooder contest going on and we have one similar to one in there. Let me see if I can find it. The thread should give you lots of ideas as well.

Edited to add, here is a link to the ongoing Brooder Contest. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=310049
Check
out the links people are posting and it shows their brooder set up. Our brooder "expansion" is similar to that in post #34.
